The attorney/client relationship is much like doctor and patient. You must feel safe to discuss all information relevant to your legal matter, trust that your communications are completely confidential, and always know the action plan. Above all, you must have no question that your lawyer puts your interest first, above all others. Communication between client and lawyer is vital. Here are some ideas on how to always keep the lines of communication open with your attorney.
Think about how you communicate with your lawyer. Sending several emails over a short time can become expensive. A scheduled telephone conference, however long or short, is the best tool for addressing issues. Try to cover several issues in one meeting or phone conference. Face to face communication is also critical. The initial consultation is how you decide whether you are going to retain a particular attorney. Don't hesitate to ask questions and take notes. As your legal matter progresses, have regular phone conferences and/or meetings with your attorney, to make sure that you are both on the same page. This is money and time well spent! You and your attorney are part of a team. Status and strategy meetings are important.
Don't be afraid to ask questions or share concerns with your lawyer. This makes the two of you an effective team. Communication is a two-way street. It is reasonable to expect a return phone call within 24 hours, if not by the end of the same day, even if only to arrange a time to discuss the question or concern more fully.
Don't be shy. If you have questions about the status of your case, or how it is being handled, ask your attorney! You should always know in advance about upcoming court hearings, and the next steps necessary to prepare your case.
